Streaming: industry’s future or death of the artist?

The debate is ongoing and never ending: will streaming become a sustainable business model or will artists and songwriters forever be ripped off. We deliberately say artists AND songwriters, because they are two different species – at least in the world of musical rights. Aloe Blacc, who is both songwriter AND performing artist, has recently voiced his concerns about a business model that is hailed as the future of the industry by its proponents.

“Make it yours”: Rick Rubin takes us back to school (Video)

“I never met anyone that focused”, says Rick Rubin‘s former NYU-Rommate Adam Dubin in the Rolling Stone film Dawn of Def Jam. In the ten minute film Rubin visits his old Dorm Room, the place where it all started. The first Def Jam record actually had the adress of that room on it, which made LL Cool J send his first Demos there. So Rick Rubin was literally taking folks to school.

Listen closely, as the legend basically gives you the secret to his success: going against what was established at the time and not being afraid to fail. “It really was about the DJ’s place in Hip-Hop, being in a way equal to that of the MC”, says Rubin. And he continues: “Noting that happened was intentional. Nothig. Everything was trying to make something cool to play for our friends that they would like. That’s all it ever was.”

Drunken Masters Live-Recap (Video)

Insalata mista is Italian and means mixed salad. But we’re sure all you gourmets out there already knew that. It is the perfect example of how a mix doesn’t always have to be extravagant to be enjoyable. Salad and a few raw vegetables are all there really is to it. The insalata mista should be a standard dish on any decent menu, just as a mix of basic bass and a few additional raw sounds should be part of any DJs set. What happens, when you serve just that to an audience with taste, can be seen in this footage of various Drunken Masters live gigs of 2013. And yes: you can eat your insalata mista con pollo, too.

ESKEI83 – Jammin’ (Eskei83 Bootleg) (Audio)

You know that amazing feeling of two seemingly uncombinable dishes forming the perfect epiphany in your mouth? ESKEI83 is known for achieving just that effect in your ears. Just listen to this sweet Jammin’ bootleg, and how it effortlessly opens up into Skrillex‘ and Damian Marleys Dub-Step-Reggae banger of 2012: Make It Bun Dem. How does the food related saying go? The apple never falls far from the tree. Maybe one Marley will always sound good on another Marley’s song, who knows. ESKEI83 surely makes it look like it is the case. Enjoy!
